Gerolzhofen had two - partly still well preserved - rings of walls. Since the 14th century the old town was enclosed by a rectangular inner wall, flanked by four corner-towers and two impressive towers which to this day stand opposite each other in the middle of the east and west sides.

The ancient road from Schweinfurt to Iphofen bisected the centrally situated market place diagonally from north-west to south-east. At the ends were the inner double towers which were demolished between 1871 and 1877: Zenttor (tithe gate) with Türmersturm (guard tower) and Spitteltor (spital gate) with Bettelturm (beggars‚tower).

The suburbs which had been build outside these towers were surrounded (from the middle of the 15th century) by a further trapeziform outer wall with four no longer existing outer gates on the arterial roads: Rügshöfer-, Dingolshäuser-, Schallfeder- and Frankenwinheimer-Gate. The moats in front of the inner and outer wall could be flooded by means of flood-gates.

Of the 26 outer towers ten round towers are preserved; easily visible during a walking tour are: Dusel (Steiger)-Turm, Böhnlein(Allee)-Turm, Scherenberg (Youth)-Turm, Krais(Powder)-Turm, Schön(Volkach)-Turm, Octagon(Baroque)-Turm, Bibra(Kilians)-Turm and Wolf(und Sickenberg)-Turm.
